Body and Business: Lessons on Individuality and Leadership

In the pursuit of personal fitness, we often find ourselves comparing our progress to others. A recent experience at the gym served as a poignant reminder of the pitfalls of such comparisons and how it relates to leadership in the business world.
Over the past year, my fitness journey led me to the gym regularly. Like many, I noticed the chiseled physique of one of the female trainers. She was undeniably fit, and what particularly caught my eye was the prominent definition at the end of her clavicle, almost like a button.
As I continued to work out diligently and shed pounds, my efforts did not translate into the desired outcome for my shoulder. There was no "button" in sight. Despite feeling lean and healthy, my clavicle did not mirror that of the buff trainer. Frustration set in, prompting me to approach her at the gym and inquire about the secret to achieving such a look.
Her response was unexpected but profound. She chuckled and explained that her distinctive clavicle appearance was simply a result of her unique bone structure, something beyond the influence of fitness routines or weight loss. It was a reminder that what works for one person may not be applicable to another, and comparing ourselves to others can lead to unrealistic expectations.
This lesson extends far beyond the gym and into the realm of leadership. In the business world, leaders often find themselves comparing their strategies, achievements, or even their leadership styles to those of their peers or industry influencers. However, just as our bone structures differ, so do the circumstances and attributes that shape each leader.

Moreover, this experience highlights the importance of open communication and seeking advice when faced with challenges. In the same way I approached the trainer at the gym to understand her secret, leaders should be willing to engage in conversations with their peers, mentors, and team members.
